Day 32 - Psalm 121: Always Watching Over Us

Day 32 Thursday

Read Psalm 121

Psalm 121 is the Psalm that I read most often when I am visiting people in the hospital. The promise that our help comes from the “Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (vs. 2) is good news no matter what situation in which we find ourselves.

Lent is a time when we look toward Christ, we spend 40 days preparing our hearts and minds and lives for the central moment of our faith, the death and resurrection of Christ. One of the most common phrases heard during Lent is to look toward the cross, to fix our eyes on the cross of Christ. Of course this is good advice. As we fix our eyes on the cross we remember how our life was saved through Jesus’ suffering.

But, it is also good news to know that God has His eyes fixed on us. Psalm 121 repeatedly reminds us of God’s watchful eye – “He who watches over you will not slumber” (vs. 3), “indeed He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep” (vs. 4), “The LORD watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand” (vs. 5), “He will watch over your life” (vs. 7), “The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.” What could be more comforting than knowing that the Maker of heaven and earth is watching over us?

Prayer

Spend some time reflecting on the idea that God is watching over you. Thank Him for His watch and ask Him to show you how to trust in Him for your help.
